Security Situation in Western Balkans Still Fragile; NATO Chief
NATO believes that the security situation in the Western Balkans is still very fragile, and there is potential for tensions in Kosovo and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
This is what the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, said on Friday from Brussels, speaking after the meeting with the Prime Minister of Montenegro, Millojko Spajic.
He said that NATO is ready to carry out its mandate in Kosovo to guarantee stability, just like in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Western Balkans, the strengthening of NATO, and preparations for the Washington summit, were the main topics of this meeting.
"The situation in the Western Balkan region remains fragile. The violence that erupted in Kosovo was unacceptable. This has caused NATO to immediately engage additional forces in Kosovo", said Stoltemberg.
He has warned that next week, the North Atlantic Council, the highest political body of the alliance, will visit Bosnia and Herzegovina, in order to prove in this way the unreserved support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Stoltenberg thanked Montenegro for its contribution to the NATO mission in Kosovo, KFOR, but also for its constructive role for peace and stability in the Balkan region.
The Prime Minister of Montenegro, Milojko Spajic, has said that for his country, stability in Kosovo is of particular importance and, in case of need, Montenegro is ready to increase the presence of its soldiers in the KFOR mission.
Spajic said that Montenegro remains a loyal member of the NATO alliance, and committed to advancing in the EU integration process.
He said that for 2024, Montenegro has allocated more than 2 percent of the Gross Domestic Product for defence, which is in line with NATO's requirements to all member countries.
The head of the alliance said that NATO has close cooperation with the EU, when the countries of the Western Balkans are in question.
He has especially underlined the importance of supporting the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia for the normalization of relations, which takes place under the mediation of the European Union.
