Tender for Concession of Saranda Airport Fails Again

The tender for the concession of Saranda airport fails for the second time. The Ministry of Infrastructure stated that no bids were submitted in the competition, while the minimum tender value was 34.3 million euros.

The deadline was November 26th. Even the first tender was cancelled precisely because there were no bids, while the government in reopening the competition eased some criteria in order to attract investors. The concession is 35 years old and the airport is planned to be of category 3C, with a runway of 2200 meters.

According to the documents, the expectations are that in the first year of operation the number of passengers will be 150 thousand per year and according to the study the number of passengers is expected to be consolidated to over 700 thousand passengers after the 10th year of operation of the concession.

Saranda Airport will be seasonal. It is planned to be built 6 km away from the city of Saranda, near the national road, 20 m above sea level. Albania currently has two airports in operation, that of Tirana and Kukes, while the works for the construction of Vlora Airport have started. For Saranda airport it is not yet known if the race will be reopened, and if there will be a review of conditions.
