Tirana-Durres Railway Will Be Finished by 2024; PM

Prime Minister, Edi Rama has shared this Tuesday morning photos from the work progress at the Tirana-Durrës railway construction site, which he said will be finished in the spring of 2024. 

In his social media reaction, the Head of Government underlined that works in this construction site are continuing at a high pace. 

"GOOD MORNING ???? and from the construction site of the Tirana-Durres railway where work continues at a high pace to be completed in March 2024, I wish you a good day", stated the Premier. 

Nevertheless, the project approved since 2016 envisages the rehabilitation of the Tirana-Durres railway line, as well as the construction of a 5 km railway branch between Tirana and Rinas Airport. 

After the complete completion of the railway work, the Tirana-Durres distance is expected to be covered by train in about 22 minutes, while the route from Tirana to the international airport of Rinas will also be shortened, and it is expected to take 12 minutes. 

Total cost of this investment amounts to EUR 92.1 million, of which EUR 36.9 million is a loan received from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, EUR 35.5 million is a grant that will be covered by the Western Balkans Investment Framework, while the remaining part of 19.7 million EUR will be financed from the state budget. 

Works for the reconstruction of the existing railway and the new line to Rinas are expected to be fully completed in 2023, and it is expected to serve both passenger and freight transport. 

Tirana - Durrës - Rinas railway is part of the Connectivity Agenda that aims to connect the region and the wider Europe.
