Two people have been detained by police during a protest near Albania’s parliament in Tirana, according to preliminary reports.

The two were reportedly taken into custody after allegedly attempting to break through metal barriers erected by police around the parliament building.

The protest is taking place while a plenary session is under way inside parliament. Protesters are expected to gather outside the building, with some planning to throw eggs at MPs as they leave the premises.

Groups of people have reportedly begun gathering at cafes across Tirana before heading towards parliament for the demonstration.

Police have surrounded the parliament and nearby areas with metal barriers, while hundreds of officers have been deployed to prevent possible clashes.

Traffic restrictions have also been introduced in several parts of the capital. Vehicle movement has been suspended from the city centre towards Elbasan Road, as well as along Zhan D’Ark Boulevard towards the 21 Dhjetori area.

Local reports say the road closures have caused heavy traffic and significant congestion across Tirana.

The demonstration is reportedly the 117th protest to be held in the capital.
