UK Embassy in Tirana Condemns Violence at Protest, Calls for De-escalation
The British Embassy in Tirana has condemned violence during an ongoing protest in the Albanian capital, urging all parties to respect fundamental rights and take steps to ease tensions.
In an official statement released on Wednesday, the embassy reaffirmed the importance of the right to peaceful protest and freedom of expression, both protected under Albania’s Constitution.
However, the embassy stressed that the right to demonstrate does not justify violence or damage to public and private property. It also warned that protests should not be met with disproportionate police action.
“The British Embassy in Tirana calls on all parties to respect these rights and contribute to reducing tensions,” the statement said.
The embassy’s appeal comes amid unrest in Tirana, highlighting the importance of safeguarding fundamental freedoms while ensuring public order and a proportionate response by law enforcement.
