US Announces Four New Sanctions against Russia

United States (US) imposed new sanctions on Friday against four Russians linked to the financial company Alfa Group and a Russian business association, the US Treasury Department announced.

These are the latest measures against Moscow's financial elite because of the war in Ukraine.

The Treasury Department said on August 11 that it has sanctioned four men who served on the supervisory board of Alfa Group – Petr Olegivich Aven, Mikhail Maratovich Fridman, German Borisovich Khan and Alexey Viktorovich Kuzmichev – one of Russia's largest financial and investment companies.

The Treasury has also imposed sanctions on the Russian Association of Employers and the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.

"Russia's wealthy elite must rid themselves of the notion that they can do business as usual while the Kremlin is waging war against the Ukrainian people," said Treasury Department Deputy Secretary Wally Adeyemo. The Russian embassy in Washington did not respond to Reuters' request for comment.
