Vucic Asked to Speak Albanian on Western Balkans' EU Integration

Asked by reporters about the integration of Albania and Northern Macedonia into the EU, where he was asked to answer in Albanian, the Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that he did not speak Albanian.

Vucic said that he fully supports the EU integration of Albania and Northern Macedonia, but now they are focused on Open Balkans.

Question: Serbia has opened 4 chapters. Montenegro has published the new methodology. Macedonia and Albania are still waiting due to the EU's failure to open negotiations. Do you think that different speeds of integration will have an effect on these constructive initiatives?

Vucic: Do you want the answer in English or Serbian?
Journalist: In Albanian.

Vucic: Unfortunately I cannot speak Albanian, I  have to learn it. Serbia supports Albania's EU integration and that of Northern Macedonia. We started talking actually in one voice. This was a bit of a surprise for our European hosts, we have agreed on everything. The point is that if you ask us if we are the only country that has opened 4 chapters, it does not affect us. We are so committed to this process that it does not matter. We will do our best to always be on the side of Macedonia and Albania. It is a process we do for ourselves. It is not the fault of the leader of Albania or Northern Macedonia. This is about EU leaders.

You have accomplished everything and you have not got what you want. I can say yes, we are in a better position. The unification of these countries, now talking about secession, is another empty story coming from bureaucrats who do not understand the essence. The Open Balkans is a real vision, as stated by Zoran and Edi. It is the vision of a different Balkans. Of our Balkans that we should not be ashamed, but to be proud. We will create a better space for all our people and living standards for them. We will stand side by side with our friends from Tirana and Skopje.
