11-year-old Raped in Kosovo, Kurti Assails Justice
Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, together with the Minister of Justice, Albulena Haxhiu, held a press conference on Sunday. Among other things, he dwells on the case of the rape of the 11-year-old girl, while he did not spare the criticism towards the justice system.
He emphasized that justice has failed because the perpetrator has moved freely despite the fact that there were other similar criminal acts.
"During this week, we were all shocked by the news about the crime that the victim was an 11-year-old. In cases like these, the implementation of human rights and respect for the law, the pursuit of crime and the exercise of high state positions that have the obligation to prevent and prosecute those who threaten the safety, well-being and physical integrity of citizens, lose meaning. When we understand that the perpetrator of the crime was previously convicted for committing criminal offenses and is free, when the police, the prosecution and the court fail, justice fails and the citizen pays the bill," said Kurti.
Prime Minister Kurti emphasized that reforms in justice, namely Vetting, are necessary in the meantime.
"Convicted of many criminal offenses, he roams the streets of Pristina, the perpetrator is released after 8 months of imprisonment, the perpetrator is not rehabilitated and repeats the crime and even kills. There is no alternative for vetting in the judicial and prosecutorial system, even the actors of this system understand this, even the biggest skeptics of vetting", he declared.
The head of the executive of Kosovo also stated that after this conference he and the ministry Haxhiu will go to the speaker of the Assembly Glauk Konjufca to hand over the relevant document for Vetting.
