Albania, 2nd Country with Most Exports to Kosovo

Kosovo Agency of Statistics has shown that Serbia had the largest share of imports in the Kosovo market. Serbia ranks first among the countries with the highest imports with 6.4%, for the first six months of the year, while Albania, second with 5.6% followed by North Macedonia, 5.2%.

Imports from Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA) countries to Kosovo in the period January-June 2021, amounted to Euro 390 million, or 19% of total imports, with an increase of 67%.

Imports from Serbia increased by 143%, from Albania by 61%, North Macedonia by 26%. Among the main obstacles identified so far for the trade exchange between Albania and Kosovo are the duplication of procedures for goods in transit through the territory of Albania; payment for scanning of goods in the Port of Durrës, regardless of the final destination; high road tolls, reference prices, discriminatory excises, additional sanitary and phytosanitary documentation and much more.

According to a study by the GAP Institute, entitled "Kosovo-Albania trade potential: obstacles and implementation of bilateral agreements", in March this year, it turned out that although there is good progress in the implementation of trade agreements between the governments of Kosovo and Albania, there are still obstacles which are not regulated by these agreements, although in almost all export sectors of Kosovo there is potential for increased trade cooperation with Albania. On the other hand, a number of obstacles have been identified which are making it impossible to exploit this potential.
