Albania Approves Summer Bonus and Pension Increase for 777,000 Retirees
Starting July 1, pensioners in Albania will receive a 2.7% pension indexation along with a one-time summer bonus of 5,000 lek (approximately €50), following a government decision expected to benefit around 777,000 retirees.
Finance Minister Delina Ibrahimaj announced that the government approved the summer bonus as an additional measure to support pensioners.
"We decided to grant a summer bonus worth 5,000 lek. More than 777,000 pensioners will benefit from this payment," Ibrahimaj said.
According to the minister, the government introduced the bonus for the first time after state revenues exceeded expectations, partly driven by higher prices. The measure carries an estimated fiscal cost of 3.7 billion lek.
The bonus distribution will begin immediately and will be paid in addition to the existing pension support that retirees have been receiving since January.
Separately, pensions will be indexed by 2.7% from July 1. The total cost of the indexation is estimated at 2.5 billion lek, including 872 million lek allocated through a recent amendment to the state budget. The government also plans to move the annual pension indexation to April starting in 2027.
Looking ahead, Ibrahimaj said the government expects to complete the first draft of a new pension scheme during July, with technical assistance from the World Bank. The final pension reform is expected to be completed by September.
