Albanian MP in Croatian Parliament Responds to Milanovic's Statement on Kosovo

The statement of Croatian President Zoran Milanovic, who declared that Kosovo was taken from Serbia, has provoked many reactions.

Among them was that of the Albanian MP in the Parliament of Croatia, Ermina Lekaj Prljaskaj, who in a post on social media stated that the process of Kosovo's independence was the same as that of Croatia.

"As a MP, among other things, and a representative of the Albanian minority in the Croatian Parliament, I need to refer to this statement and present some historical facts.

The Republic of Kosovo was created in the process of dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY), the same as the Republic of Croatia. It is important to note that according to the Constitution of the SFRY, the Autonomous Socialist Province of Kosovo was not only a province within the Republic of Serbia, but also a constituent element of the federation. Even the representative of Kosovo, Sinan Hasani, has held the nominal office of the head of state for one year, as chairman of the Presidency.

The powers defined by the constitution, which in many elements were close to a kind of limited citizenship, were forcibly removed from Kosovo, so that autonomous Kosovo was degraded into an administrative unit in which there would be a police regime and mass persecution of the Albanian majority.

All this, due to the risk of an imminent disaster and the violation of the provisions of international humanitarian law, led to a humanitarian intervention, known in international relations and precisely in the area of South-Eastern Europe.

Therefore, contesting the citizenship of Kosovo would be as if today we are contesting the citizenship of modern Greece (which was founded in 1830) or of Bulgaria (whose first forms of modern citizenship were recognized in 1878).

Just as the Constitution of the SFRY of 1974 and other legal acts and the democratic decision-making of citizens were the legal and factual basis for the independence of the Republic of Croatia, the same model was applied in the case of the independence of the Republic of Kosovo.

The Republic of Croatia was among the first to recognize the independence of the Republic of Kosovo and established diplomatic and political relations based on partnership, cooperation and promotion of European values.

Also, the Republic of Croatia strongly supports the efforts of the Republic of Kosovo for its membership in the Euro-Atlantic integration and the strengthening of its position in Southeast Europe.

In the light of all these relations, I would like to emphasize the first economic forum Croatia - Kosovo, which was held last week in Pristina under the patronage of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo.

Its successful implementation shows the direction in which Kosovo wants to go towards the family of European states with the support of the Republic of Croatia and other friendly countries.

"Our two countries are connected historically and politically. The time has come to connect economically", said the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, during the ceremonial opening of the Forum.

This message is exactly what I want to be a guide for our common future," she wrote.
