Albania's Parliament has approved a $302 million loan agreement with the United States to finance the purchase of military equipment, following a closed-door parliamentary session held on Monday.

The agreement was passed with 74 votes in favour from the ruling Socialist Party-led majority, with the support of three lawmakers from the Social Democratic Party (PSD). The vote was conducted behind closed doors due to the classified and strategic nature of the agreement.

The loan will support Albania's efforts to strengthen its defence capabilities through the acquisition of military equipment under a financing arrangement with the United States.

The opposition Democratic Party (PD) did not participate in the vote, arguing that the parliamentary procedure violated both the Constitution and Parliament's Rules of Procedure.

Ahead of the session, Democratic Party parliamentary leader Gazment Bardhi said opposition lawmakers had not been provided with the full text of the agreement and claimed that the constitutional deadline for reviewing the draft law had not been respected.

Despite boycotting the vote, the Democratic Party reiterated its support for strengthening Albania's defence cooperation with the United States, stressing that its objections were related to the legislative process rather than the substance of the agreement itself.

The approval comes amid heightened political tensions in Parliament following an earlier incident involving opposition MP Agron Shehaj and the handling of classified documents related to the U.S. loan agreement. The incident prompted the ruling Socialist Party to seek disciplinary measures against the lawmaker and refer the case to Albania's Special Prosecution against Corruption (SPAK).
