CEC Removes Beleri's Mandate as Mayor of Himara

The Central Elections Commission in Albania (CEC) decided this Friday to remove the mandate of mayor to Fredi Beleri.

He was elected on May 14, 2023 as the mayor of Himara, but two days prior to the result he was arrested on vote buying charges.

"They don't have any incentive other than what the CEC encourages by the law on decriminalization", said Celibashi, among other things, as he added that the Electoral Commission has all the powers to make this decision.

New elections must be realized now in Himara.

Meanwhile, Fredi Beleri, has been elected as an MEP with Greece’s ruling New Democracy party in the last European elections.

With a bit over 96% of the votes counted, Beleri had secured 236,271 votes, placing fourth among the seven MEPs elected with the conservatives and fourth among the 21 Greek MEPs overall.

The campaign was run by his son, Petros Beleri.

The top vote-getter was prominent journalist and TV presenter Giorgos Aftias, who was leading with 307,495 votes.
