Consecutive Quakes Shake Italy

Several earthquakes have been recorded since yesterday evening by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.

Initially, two shocks of magnitude 2.5 and 3.6 were recorded in the Etna area south of Paterno, in the province of Catania, this morning. A second seismic episode occurred around 12:24 in the Marche region, in Folignano, in the province of Ascoli Piceno, with a magnitude of 4.1. The earthquake was followed a minute later, at 12:25 p.m., by another earthquake of magnitude 3.6.

Then, in the early hours of the afternoon, several tremors alerted the residents of Genoa and the surrounding area of ??Liguria: in this case, the magnitude was 4.4. Finally, a magnitude 3.8 earthquake was recorded at 5:49 p.m., followed immediately by another smaller one.

For seismologist Carlo Meletti, of the Pisa section of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, there is no connection between the earthquakes in Sicily, Marche and Liguria.

"There is no connection, the distances between the places where the earthquakes occurred are hundreds of kilometers for there to be a connection", he explained.
