EU Spokesperson Confirms that Kurti, Vucic Accepted Proposal
The spokesperson of the European Union for foreign policy and security, Peter Stano, has said that the two leaders, the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti and the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, have agreed to accept the EU's proposal, and that there were no expectations for that text to be signed that day.
Stano made these comments while answering questions about the dilemmas of whether or not Kosovo and Serbia have accepted the agreement on the normalization of relations at the February 27 meeting, since the president of Serbia, Vucic, has not confirmed such a thing.
President Vucic has said that he did not want to sign it because there is a point, which requires Serbia not to oppose Kosovo's membership in any international organization, and this means the United Nations.
"I have nothing to add, but only to repeat the text and the statement given by the high representative (Josep) Borrell, with which both leaders have agreed. We are not going to comment on every statement, or every interpretation in the region about what they have agreed on. This is very clear from the text", said Stano.
Referring to the refusal of that text to be signed by the parties, he said that "it was not the issue of signing, but the discussions about the proposal that both parties agreed on, that there is no longer a need for additional discussions about this European proposal, which has now turned into an agreement on the road to normalization between Kosovo and Serbia".
Prime Minister Kurti, on Monday night, after the meeting, had said in Brussels that he was ready to sign this agreement immediately, but the president of Serbia was not ready.
President Vucic, meanwhile, said in an interview on a Serbian television that he really did not want to sign this agreement. Vucic spoke more about the implementation plan.
Sources in the EU have said that the implementation plan is thought to be an integral part as an annex to the agreement, therefore, when that plan is agreed, the agreement with the annex as part of it should also be signed.
The EU spokesperson, Stano, has said that the discussions on the implementation plan will continue.
"Also, we have clearly said that we understand that the further work will continue when it comes to the discussions for implementation and to ensure that there will be concrete steps on the way to the normalization of the reports", said Stano.
