Ex-C.Court's Head Defends Himself Before Judges
Former head of the Constitutional Court, Bashkim Dedja, defended himself in the Special Court, after SPAK sentenced him to 1 years in prison, accusing him of concealing assets.
Dedja stated that the apartment in Golem with a space of 60m2 and a garage for which the Prosecutor's Office has accused him is in the name of his brother and the latter must answer.
"As for the loan of 10,000 euros from my brother-in-law, he worked in emigration, and he did not declare his income in the 2000s from emigration. I received a loan for the 146m2 apartment in Tirana until 2033," he said.
The prosecution was accused by Dedja of raising unsupported accusations. Furthermore, the court decided to postpone the hearing to June 15, in order to give the defense time to familiarize itself with the evidence.
Bashkim Dedja is accused of concealment and non-declaration of assets, while SPAK requested 1 year of imprisonment, which is converted due to the shortened trial to 2 years of probation. After leaving the session, Dedja did not prefer to comment, saying that he will answer at another time.
According to SPAK, the apartment in Golem was registered in the name of Dedja's brother, but it was actually owned and used by the former judge.
In December 2017, the Appeal Chamber decided to dismiss Bashkim Dedja, the head of the Constitutional Court, overturning the decision of the first instance of Veting.
On June 13 of the same year, the Independent Qualification Commission had confirmed Dedja in office, but the International Monitoring Operation presented the Public Commissioner with a recommendation to appeal this decision to the Appeal Chamber, where his fate was finally decided.
