Farewell Archbishop Anastasios, A Life in Service to God, Knowledge, and Coexistence
It is with deep sorrow that I received the news of the passing of the Archbishop of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania, Prof. Dr. Anastasios. A towering figure of intellect, spirituality, and humanism, he dedicated his life to the revival of the Orthodox Church in Albania and the promotion of universal values such as peace, love, and coexistence.
Archbishop Anastasios arrived in Albania during a challenging period and, with extraordinary vision and unwavering dedication, successfully spearheaded the complete reconstruction of the Orthodox Church. He not only strengthened religious faith but also championed interfaith coexistence, presenting Albania as a unique model of religious harmony to the world.
Beyond his role as a spiritual leader, Archbishop Anastasios was a distinguished thinker and a major contributor to philosophy, theology, and science. As the author of numerous theological and philosophical works, his writings and ideas inspired generations of scholars and believers, delving into the essence of spiritual life and the mission of universal love. His tenure as a professor at several prestigious international universities allowed him to share his knowledge with students worldwide, becoming a bridge between Western and Eastern thought.
He was also a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, an acknowledgment of his profound contributions and numerous achievements. His unwavering commitment to intercultural and interreligious dialogue is an enduring legacy for future generations.
I hold fond memories of my meetings with His Beatitude, particularly our last encounter five days before his hospitalization at the “Mother Teresa” Hospital in Tirana. Those moments remain a testament to his humble and inspiring character, a living example of devotion and divine love.
The passing of Archbishop Anastasios leaves behind an irreplaceable void, but his spiritual, philosophical, and humanitarian legacy will endure forever. In this moment of mourning, we extend our deepest condolences to the Orthodox Church and to all who knew and cherished this extraordinary figure.
May the memory of His Beatitude be eternal
