Father Charged with Murder in Largo Amber Alert Case, Child Found Safe

An 8-year-old Clearwater girl who was the subject of an Amber Alert on Monday was found safe, and her father was charged with first-degree murder in the death of her mother, police said.

Alessia Muhaj was found safe and her father, Renato Muhaj, 34, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of her mother, Suela Saliaj, 32. He was also charged with kidnapping and child abuse, Largo police Chief Mike Loux said during a news conference Monday afternoon.

The incident started about 2:44 a.m. Monday, when Clearwater police were called to a domestic battery case at Oakbrook Village Apartments on the 2200 block of Nursery Road, the agency said in a news release. Police say Muhaj battered both of his parents and took away their cellphones so they could not call 911. Both parents were treated at Morton Plant Hospital after the incident, the news release states.

During their investigation, Clearwater police contacted the Largo Police Department for help in locating Muhaj. Largo police responded to the Bayside Court Apartments at 1760 Clearwater Largo Road. A parking ticket that Muhaj received in Pinellas County in September 2022 listed an apartment there as his home address, records show, the Tamba Bay. com wrote.
