First Case of Monkeypox Confirmed in Serbia

Serbia confirmed on Friday the first case with the monkeypox. The institute of public health in this country, Batut, said the case is imported. Its press release states that all measures have been taken to identify, test, report and control the further spread of the infection.

"In accordance with International Health Regulations and Protocols, the first confirmed case of smallpox in Serbia was reported to international health institutions", the Batut Institute said.

Monkeypox is a virus that causes fever, skin rash and pimples. There are two main variants: the Congo variant, which is the most severe - with a mortality rate of up to 10 percent - and the West African variant, which has a mortality rate of about 1 percent of cases.

The virus is spread through close contact between animals and, less frequently, between humans. It is more common in African countries, but in recent months there have been cases in Europe and the US as well.
