First Regular Shipment of LNG from U.S. Arrives in Germany
The first regular shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States has arrived in Germany as part of major efforts to help the country replace the energy supplies it previously obtained from Russia.
The Maria Energy vessel arrived at the North Sea port of Wilhelmshaven, where the LNG cargo will be turned back into gas at a special floating terminal that was inaugurated last month by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Germany has been scrambling to find a replacement for Russian gas supplies following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The Wilhelmshaven facility is one of several terminals designated to help avoid power shortages. Germany has also temporarily reactivated old oil and coal power plants and extended the lives of its last three nuclear plants until mid-April.
