Greece Train Crash, Six Albanians among Victims

Six Albanians nationals were confirmed among 57 victims of the train crash in Greece days ago. The news was confirmed by the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Olta Xhacka.

She also confirmed the name of the victims, identified as: Klaudia Lato, Ifigjena Micka, Erieta Molko, Ioanis Xhiollas, Denis Ruci and Pavlin Bozo.

"Sincere condolences to the families of the victims of the tragic railway accident in Greece. So many lives cut in half so suddenly and so tragically! On this day of mourning, a special prayer goes out to the families of 6 of our compatriots who lost their lives in this accident," said Minister.

Greece’s prime minister has apologised for the worst rail accident in the country’s history as a station master facing multiple charges including involuntary manslaughter began to testify in court.

Amid mounting protests nationwide, the 59-year-old appeared in front of a magistrate in Larissa, the city where the doomed locomotive stopped late on Tuesday before ramming, head-on and at high speed, into a freight train using the same track.

On impact, the front three carriages exploded, killing 57, the majority young people returning home from a long holiday weekend. Scores of others were injured and many are still thought to be missing.

Five days later, with the nation in mourning and an investigation under way, the station master’s testimony is seen as key to answering the ever multiplying questions the tragedy has posed.
