Greek Embassy Announces Photo Contest, Winner to Be Rewarded
In view of the approaching International Greek Language Day on February 9, the Greek Embassy has announced through its social media a Photography Contest.
Giving it the form of a “word hunt game”, the Embassy invites participants to capture the images of Greek words that have passed into the Albanian language, as observed in their everyday life, e.g. pharmacy, telephone, optics.
Greek Embassy’s initiative coincides with the three years’ anniversary of “The Greek Word of the Week”, a thematic published every Wednesday again on its social media. It includes the presentation of Greek words that have passed into both the Albanian and the English languages. The word chosen each week is presented in Greek, Albanian and English. A short etymology, as well as a concise and understandable explanation of its meaning is provided too. The concepts of the words are highlighted by elegant images that aesthetically frame the posts and are connected to Greece and the Greek culture.
The goal of these initiatives is to highlight the plethora of common things we think in Albania and Greece using the same words and of common ideas we share in our two languages, since Greek words and notions have ceased in the course of centuries to be exclusively Greek; they have become universal, ecumenical.
The Photography Contest is free to enter and open to anyone. There is no limitation in the number of images per person. Those who wish to participate can send their photographs to pdo.tirana@mfa.gr. The images will be posted on the Greek Embassy’s social media. The deadline for participation is February 7, 2025 and the winner will enjoy a weekend in Athens!
