Greek Minister Speaks after Meeting Fredi Beleri in Prison

The Minister of State of Greece, Stavros Papastavrou, has arrived in Durrës prison. After meeting Fredi Beleri, he said that the Municipality of Himara is the only municipality in Europe that does not have a mayor.

"I just saw in prison the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, who has been in custody for 7 months. Times are definitely tough and that's why I wanted to be here. Unfortunately, the principle of popular sovereignty has not yet been implemented in Himara.

It is the only Municipality in all of Europe, where the disqualified mayor continues to exercise power, while the elected mayor is deprived of the democratic right to take the oath. We stand with Fredi Beleri on his right to a fair trial, which continues tomorrow.

We want his presumption of innocence to be fully respected by Albanian justice. A fair solution must be found, within the framework of the European framework, the rule of law and the principle of good neighbourliness, to restore democratic normality in Himara", he stated in Greek according to the announcement provided by Protothema.

For a long time, Fredi Beleri has asked the Court for permission to take the oath as the mayor of Himara, who won the May 14 elections from prison, while he was arrested two days before the elections.
