Debate on NATO Intervention in Kosovo, Ambassador Denion Meidani: History Will Not Be Rewritten!
During an interview, the well-known journalists Piers Morgan and Tucker Carlson were engaged in a heated debate over NATO’s role in the 1999 intervention in Yugoslavia.
“NATO is a defensive organization and has never acted aggressively…”, Morgan said.
In response, Carlson argued that: They were heavily bombing Christians in Yugoslavia, and that was offensive.
After the interview, Morgan reacted on social media: Despite the outrage of Tucker and the many uninformed people commenting on this clip, I was right. NATO’s military action in this case was a humanitarian intervention designed to stop widespread ethnic cleansing.
Albania’s ambassador, Denion Meidani, responded forcefully, stating: I have friends from Kosovo who lost everything because of that war! I have friends from Kosovo who lost all their loved ones because of that atrocity of ethnic cleansing. I have friends from Kosovo who were born in refugee camps.
In 1999, NATO intervened in Kosovo to stop the ethnic cleansing of Albanians by Serbian forces under Slobodan Miloševi?. With diplomacy failing and war crimes escalating, the operation became necessary to prevent further atrocities.
“History will not be rewritten!” – stressed Ambassador Meidani.
According to the US State Department, Serbian forces carried out a campaign of ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, including:
The mass expulsion of Albanians from their homes,
The burning and looting of homes, schools, religious buildings and hospitals,
Arbitrary arrests and summary executions,
Rapes and other forms of systematic violence.
NATO’s intervention in 1999 was seen as a necessary action to stop these atrocities and prevent an even greater humanitarian crisis.
