KFOR Reacts Over Bayraktar Drone Purchased by Kosovo
NATO's mission in Kosovo, KFOR, has declared the use of all categories of drones, including the Bayraktar TB-2, which it has said has primary authority over the country's airspace.
KFOR made this statement through a press release a day after Prime Minister Albin Kurti announced that Kosovo has purchased the Bayraktar TB-2 drone from Turkey.
"Regarding the use of all categories of drones and related restrictions, including the Bayraktar TB-2, in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 of 1999, the Kosovo Force Commander (KFOR) has the main authority for the airspace over Kosovo", the communiqué states.
According to KFOR, Kosovo's upper airspace can only be used to fly over Kosovo from one country to another through commercial flights.
"The upper airspace of Kosovo can only be used to fly over Kosovo from one country to another through commercial flights; the lower airspace can be used for specific needs, case by case and according to the previous authorization by the KFOR commander. We expect the institutions in Kosovo to ensure coordination and respect the existing procedures", it is said there.
The communiqué also states that KFOR remains fully focused on ensuring a safe and secure environment and freedom of movement for all communities in Kosovo, in accordance with the aforementioned UN mandate.
KFOR has also expressed support for the Kosovo Security Force, according to their initial mandate.
"We support the KSF for civil defense operations such as firefighting, explosive ordnance disposal, search and rescue and response to hazardous material spills."
