Kosovo Police Uses Tear Gas to Disperse Serbians Protesting against Car Plates Ban

Tensions were recorded this Monday in Northern Kosovo after the reciprocity decision with Serbian license plates as the Police fired tear gas to disperse Serbs who had blocked roads with vehicles.

Serbian protesters withdrew to gather at other points and more tensions are expected to occur in the north, especially at border crossings, as the Kosovo government surprisingly decided today to reciprocate with Serbian license plates and vehicles to replace when entering Kosovo license plates with 'RKS', Republic of Kosovo's initials.

Nevertheless, the turmoil came after Kosovo’s decision to not allow vehicles with Serbian number plates circulate in its territory and after Embassy of the United States in Kosovo urged the official Pristina and Belgrade to refrain and reduce tensions immediately.

In its official statement, the US Embassy said that it joins the call that the European Union made to Kosovo and Serbia, after the mess created at the border crossings as a result of the recent decision of the Government of Kosovo for license plates.

" We join the European Union in calling on Kosovo and Serbia to exercise restraint, refrain from further unilateral actions, and reduce tensions--immediately, without delay," the US embassy underlined.

Earlier, EU foreign policy chief Peter Stano told a news conference that tensions between the two sides should be stopped and dialogue should be used to resolve such disputes.

"We are closely monitoring the situation and I want to emphasize that freedom of movement is a basic condition of the EU and we expect this from Kosovo and Serbia to promote it. We urge both sides to show restraint and reduce tensions. "Immediately and without any delay", Stano declared.

Stano said that Kosovo and Serbia should use dialogue as the only platform to resolve all open issues that these two countries may have, including freedom of movement.

Meanwhile, many vehicles were stopped at the border crossings in Jarinje and Brnjak, while the Kosovo Police did not allow any vehicle leaving Serbia to Kosovo to cross the border points, without being equipped with temporary license plates of the Republic of Kosovo.

The decision on this was signed today by the Minister of Internal Affairs of Kosovo, Xhelal Sveçla.

On the other hand, a part of the vehicles that are entering Kosovo from Serbia through the border crossings are being placed with temporary signs.

This morning, the Specialized Units of the Kosovo Police are positioned at the border point Kosovo - Serbia, in Jarinje. Dozens of Kosovo Police armored vehicles have gone there to ensure the implementation of the latest decision of the Government of Kosovo.
