'New Developments Expected on Maritime Talks with Albania'
The Foreign Minister of Greece, Nikos Dendias, has brought back to attention the issue of the sea with Albania. In an interview with the ERT media, the Greek diplomat warned that this year there will be developments, while he said that "the Albanian side is preparing to sign and deliver a power of attorney to the President, so that the negotiating team will be given the opportunity to discussed with Greece on this matter".
"When will this happen? This should be determined by the Prime Minister of Albania, but I think it will not be too late", said Nikos Dendias.
Dendias has said that in relations with Albania the model has changed to a large extent and that he believes in Greek-Albanian friendship or even in the bridge connecting the Greek minority.
"I believe in Greek-Albanian friendship. I believe that the Greek minority is a connecting bridge that connects the two countries and I want to tell you that Albania should pay attention to something from the Greek side. Albania has absolutely accepted what we propose to Turkey, i.e. a joint promise to expand territorial waters. Albania directly said that Greece can expand its territorial waters. So, I think we should be careful about the brave Albanian position", said Dendias, among other things.
In the Greek parliament, on January 20, 2021, the draft law was approved for the expansion of the country's territorial waters from 6 to 12 miles in the Ionian Sea. This decision was accompanied by many debates and reactions in Albania regarding the fact that Greece's decision can affect the exclusive economic zone and the effect of the Greek islands in defining the maritime zones between the two countries. So this case was decided to be tried in The Hague.
