New EU Ambassador to Albania Appointed

Diplomat Silvio Gonzato has been nominated as ambassador of the European Union in Tirana. 

Gonzato was nominated to the post by the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, on November 27. 

In the announcement of the Diplomatic Service of the European Union, it is emphasized that Gonzato will be officially appointed on December 1, 2023. 

Silvio Gonzato started his career in the EU in 1988. He has served as Deputy Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations in New York. 

Gonzato was previously Director of Human Rights and Democracy at the European External Action Service (EEAS). In this capacity, he was responsible for the organization and content of all consultations between the EU and partner countries (more than 40 of them), the development of policy guidelines and guidance for EU bilateral and multilateral delegations on issues related to do with supporting democracy. 

In September 2015 he was appointed Director for Inter-institutional Relations, Policy Coordination and Public Diplomacy at the EEAS. 

He was responsible for coordinating all political and legislative files and preparing the meetings of the Foreign Affairs Council. He was also responsible for public diplomacy activities (including the promotion of cultural issues in the EU's external relations), strategic communication issues.
