New mayor of North Mitrovica, Erden Atiç, will take his oath of office on May 19 in the building of this municipality, officially beginning his mandate. 

In the snap local elections held on April 23, Atiçnga Lévizja Vetëvendosje won about 550 votes or 66 percent of the votes. The participation in the extraordinary local elections was 3.47 percent of the electoral body. 

However, the other three new mayors of the municipalities in the north will not be sworn in on Friday. 

Elections in the four Serb-majority northern Kosovo municipalities – North Mitrovica, Zveçan, Leposaviq and Zubin Potok – were held after the previous mayors from Kosovo's largest Serb party, Serbian List, resigned last November.  

They left the institutions as a sign of dissatisfaction with a decision of the Government of Kosovo that obliged drivers with cars with illegal license plates issued by Serbia, to re-register them with legal license plates RKS - Republic of Kosovo. 

Members of the Serbian community widely boycotted the April elections and said they do not accept the results, namely the new leaders from the Albanian community. 

In the Municipality of Leposaviq, the new mayor has been elected Lulzim Hetemi from Vetëvendosje, in the area of Zveçan, Ilir Peci from the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), while Zubin Potok will be led by Izmir Zeqiri, also from the PDK. 

However, it is not known when and where these three new presidents will take the oath, in order to officially take office. 

Unlike North Mitrovica, where there is a municipal building that works according to the Kosovo system, in other municipalities in the north, until now, the local authorities of Kosovo were located in the buildings of the so-called temporary bodies that work according to the Serbian system. 

Also, in some municipalities, until now the heads of the municipalities have been the same both in the Kosovo system and in the Serbian one. 

Radio Free Europe reported that after the swearing-in of the new mayor of North Mitrovica, Kosovo Government officials will hold a meeting with the other mayors to agree on the date and place of their swearing-in.
