Omicron Variant May Be more Transmissible than Delta; Bino

Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases at the Institute of Public Health, prof. Silva Bino said that from the point of view of transmissibility Omicron is thought to have a higher transmittance than other variants.

Bino said that according to current data, the vaccines produced are effective against the new variant.

"Omicron's transmissibility is thought to be higher than Delta's, however this remains to be seen because there is a need to assess what transmissibility is within the family or outside it.

In terms of severe forms, of course the increase in cases can be followed by severe forms. What matters is to assess that avoidance of immunity whether natural or from the vaccine. However, we have data, not all possible data, but that the vaccine has an effectiveness, therefore it is very important to be vaccinated ", said Bino.

A total of 2,103,351 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered since the start of vaccination. Of which, 1,072,645 are first doses; 961,013 second doses and 67,381 third doses. Vaccination against COVID-19 is open to all persons +16 years of age as well as children +12 years of age with immune system problems.
