New Govt to Swear in Before President Meta
Prime Minister Edi Rama has admitted during a debate on Thursday evening that as long as President Ilir Meta is in the office of the Presidency, the government will be sworn in before him.
According to the Prime Minister, he has not had any debate with President Meta, simply President Meta and Socialist Party (SP) took irreversibly divided paths. Rama was asked if there was a meeting between him and President Meta during the summer because the President was seen calmer, but Rama did not respond.
Excerpts from the conversation:
Question: Are you going to swear in Meta's office?
Rama: For as long as he is in office…
Question: Were there any attempts of reconciliation between you and the President this summer? You have debated and reconciled with each other often in the past.
Rama: I have not debated with him. The paths between SP and Ilir Meta are simply irreversibly divided.
Debate in distance between Prime Minister Edi Rama and President of the Republic, Ilir Meta culminated in 2019 when President Meta decided to postpone the local elections of June 30, due to possible civil unrest as united opposition has left the parliament and boycotted the elections, at a time when many protests were organized by them. PM Rama refused to meet President and discuss another date for local elections, simply deciding to enter the elections of June 30 without rivals. Also, after April 25 elections, PM Rama decided to dismiss President Meta with the necessary votes in Parliament thanks to the new opposition which took mandates after the united opposition left in 2019. PM Rama claims President Meta has violated Constitution. Constitutional Court will take the final decision.
