President Sets May 9, 2027, as Date for Local Elections Amid Opposition Boycott of Presidential Consultations

President Bajram Begaj has officially decreed May 9, 2027, as the date for the country's next local government elections, following consultations with political parties that were marked by the absence of opposition representatives.

The decision came after a series of meetings held earlier in the day, attended only by representatives of the governing Socialist Party and the Social Democratic Party, led by Tom Doshi. Opposition parties declined the president's invitation to participate in the consultations.

May 9 was proposed during the discussions by representatives of the Social Democratic Party. The date was also recommended by the State Election Commissioner, who argued that it would provide the Central Election Commission (CEC) with additional time to prepare the necessary administrative and logistical arrangements for the electoral process.

May 2 was ruled out as a possible election date because it coincides with Orthodox Easter celebrations.

According to the presidential announcement, the selection of May 9 was not intended to favor any political party or influence voters' free will.

President Begaj called on all political parties to participate in the elections by presenting their platforms, political alternatives and candidates. He also urged political actors to ensure a fair and competitive electoral process in line with democratic standards.

The president further emphasized the importance of full cooperation with the Central Election Commission to guarantee the proper organization and conduct of the vote.

The May 2027 local elections are expected to be a significant political test for Albania, as parties prepare to compete for control of local government institutions across the country.
