Remittances Decline Sharply Since Pandemic Outbreak
According to the Bank of Albania, the remittances fell significantly in the first 6 months of 2020. They sent 102 million euros less than in 2019 and the biggest decline was recorded in the period April-June immediately after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
Specifically for this period, emigrants working abroad brought 121 million euros, out of 185 million euros they sent for the same period of 2019.
Countries in which more Albanian citizens live such as Italy, Greece, Germany or even the US, suffered a severe blow to their economies as a result of the pandemic, which led to a sharp drop to money sent in their home country.
This is the most significant decline in remittances since July-September 2009, when only 131 million euros were sent.
