Serbian President Discusses Kosovo Issue with Russian Ambassador
The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has thanked Russia for its support to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Serbia, in a meeting he held with the Russian ambassador, Aleksandar Bocan-Kharchenko, on October 24. This meeting took place as the deadline for re-registration of cars with Serbian license plates in RKS - Republic of Kosovo is approaching.
In a communique issued after the meeting, Vucic expressed the hope that the much-needed peace on European soil will be achieved in a short period of time.
This meeting comes a day after the German Minister for Europe and Climate, Anna Luhrmann, called on Serbia to harmonize its foreign policy with that of the European Union.
Serbia, although a candidate country for membership in the European Union - and despite the calls of Western officials - has refused to impose sanctions on Russia, for the war started in Ukraine.
In the communique of October 24, it was said that the issues discussed between Vucic and the Russian ambassador were: bilateral cooperation, geopolitical situation and regional issues.
"The two interlocutors also discussed the situation in Kosovo and Metohija, President Vucic emphasized that Serbia, despite all the challenges, continues to have a peaceful policy and is committed to the implementation of all agreements reached so far and to respect the international law", the statement said.
The deadline for re-registration of cars in RKS started on September 1 and ends on October 31.
Until now, the Government of Kosovo has said that the deadline for re-registration will not be postponed and that from November 1, cars with license plates issued by Serbia will no longer be able to circulate.
These license plates are considered illegal by the authorities in Kosovo, but until now they have been tolerated in the north of Kosovo.
The envoy of the United States for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, has called on the Government of Kosovo to extend the deadline for re-registration for 10 months.
The Government of Kosovo has stated that it is obliged to implement the law, constitutionality and government decisions.
