SMI Accuses Govt of Abandoning Quake-Affected Citizens

Chairwoman of the SMI, Monika Kryemadhi has accused the government of having left homeless the families which survived the deadly quake of Novemeber 26, even though one year has passed.

Pointing out that a year ago our hearts were divided by the earthquake that shook the foundations of Albania, Kryemadhi declared that the reconstruction process shouldn't be used by the government as a propaganda program, adding that the crises require responsible leaders.

"A year ago today, our hearts were split in two by the earthquake that shook the foundations of Albania, resulting in the loss of lives of our 51 citizens. Fraternal solidarity between Albanians and the support of foreign friends enabled us to stand on our own two feet during those very critical moments of uncertainty for Albanian families, for the Albanian economy, for business and employees.

The tremors exposed Albania beyond the facade of the Renaissance. After that, Albania had a catastrophic confrontation with the crisis left behind by the earthquake. Even today, 1 year after the tragic event, the families who survived the earthquakes have not been provided with safe shelter but have been left in the middle of the streets, without a solution. As the economy and unemployment continue to deteriorate, Albanians continue to emigrate.

Reconstruction should not be used by the government as a propaganda program. Crises require responsible leadership, which does not provoke problems but solves problems. There is a need for leaders who feel empathy for citizens and a vision of unity for the fastest and most complete solution to crises, economic and social problems that they cause. Albania and Albanians need a government that works for everyone, not just those associated with it," said Kryemadhi.
