Spain to Return Young Albanian Man's Heart after Three Years

Story of Saimir Sula, the young man who passed away in Spain, but who was brought to Albania without a vital organ, is expected to end this July, as after almost three years his heart will rest next to his body.

Ministry of Justice announced on Sunday that it has been agreed with the Spanish authorities that Saimir Sula's heart will be handed over to his family on the 12th of this month.

"The Ministry of Justice, in cooperation with the General Prosecutor's Office, the Prosecutor's Office of Tirana, the Institute of Forensic Medicine, with the support of the Albanian Embassy in Madrid, have developed continuous communications about the logistical details of this procedure, the route of air, sea or land transport, mode of transportation.

If the Spanish authorities will agree, all that remains is to obtain transit permits from all the countries where the vehicle will pass", stated the Ministry's announcement.

All procedures for taking over Saimir Sule's heart will be performed in the presence of family members.

Sula passed away in May 2020 at del Mar hospital in Barcelona where she had gone with symptoms of Covid 19 to do a PCR test.

In still unclear circumstances, the young man died, while when the body arrived in Albania, forensic medicine experts in Tirana discovered that the heart was missing.

Saimir's sister, Majlinda Sula, turned her brother's case into a cause, pursuing it in legal ways, but also through protests in both countries.

After three years, the heart will return to the deceased, but his sister has also requested a DNA test to make sure that the vital organ belongs to Saimir Sula.
