Spain Will Not Support Kosovo's EU Membership Application

Spain has announced that it will not support Kosovo's application for membership in the European Union. This was announced on Tuesday by the representative of Spain for the EU, Pascual Navarro, during his appearance before the Joint Commission for the EU.

He stated that Spain does not recognize Kosovo, therefore it will vote against any procedural decision and the granting of candidate status to Kosovo.

"Once Kosovo has officially submitted its request for membership to the current Presidency, in this case the Czech Republic, a 'procedural decision' must be taken, which it is assumed that Sweden will approve as of January as the new Presidency," Navarro said. .

He further added that it is not unusual to seek the opinion of the European Commission and then debate the matter in the General Affairs Council, and finally decide the European leaders in the European Council.

"The government will not support the candidacy under the current circumstances and this position has not changed", he emphasized.

However, Navarro says that the Government of Spain "has a constructive attitude" in relation to the Western Balkans, supports dialogue and finally the liberalization of visas for Kosovo.
