Statues that Infuriated Albanians

Albania’s national hero Skanderbeg is probably the personality to whom the largest statues have been dedicated by artists in Albania, but also abroad. The latest was inaugurated in Prizren on the occasion of the Independence Day. But it was severely criticized.

In addition to the work done with proportions and facial expressions, which does not at all resemble to what Albanians are used to seeing when looking at the Albanina hero, neither the horse is there.

In the photo shared by the mayor, Mytaher Haskuka, citizens criticized the statue, considering it a mockery of the figure of the national hero.

For Nue Oroshi, the creator of the statue of Skanderbeg in Prizren, this is the original image of Albania’s national hero, but it was not well received by Albanians because "they have been taught all their lives with a copy”, according to the sculptor. The Skanderbeg’s sculpture cost a full 70.000 euros.

Historian Eleni Kocaqi described as ‘a caricature’ the statue of the National Hero Skanderbeg, placed in the middle of Prizren on the occasion of the 108th anniversary of Independence.

According to her, the statue of Skanderbeg should be removed because the sculptor has badly damaged its figure.

After a series of criticisms, it was decided to remove even the statue of the legendary KLA Commander, Adem Jashari from the city of Prizren.

The statue, which was inaugurated on the occasion of Independence Day and Jashari's 65th birthday, was criticized by citizens for the way it portrayed the Hero of War in Kosovo.

The management team of the shopping center where the statue was placed declared that the statue will be removed.

The Jashari family has also agreed on this decision, while it is learned that September will be remodeled.

The pedagogue and sculptor, Ilir Muharremi, said that the sculpture of Skanderbeg and Adem Jashari should be removed and rebuilt from scratch.

"Very long beard, very weak waist. It damages the historical image of the figures, they look more like cartoons and not sculptures, they should be removed,” he said.
