Street in Bronx Neighborhood Named after Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeu

By the decision of the Municipality of New York, a street in the Bronx neighborhood was named after Albania national hero "Gjergj Kastrioti-Skënderbeu".

The naming ceremony took place yesterday, attended by a large number of Albanian-Americans, as well as lawmakers and New York officials.

The unveiling ceremony of the plaque with the name of the well-known Albanian figure gathered a large number of members of the Albanian-American community, who celebrated with songs and dances on the day they described as historic.

The celebrations in the Bronx, in a part of the city, which is now known as "Little Albania", aroused the interest of Americans. The new name at the intersection of Crescent Avenue and Adams Place was approved earlier this year by New York City, at the request of former city council member and Albanian-American activist Mark Gjonaj.

He says for VOA that the road "Gjergj Kastrioti-Skënderbeu" is the result of many years of work that must continue.

While, New York Mayor Eric Adams said that the Albanian-American community represents the best part of New York City. He thanked this community for its commitment to a safer society.

"When I talk about good New Yorkers, I talk about Albanians because you are representatives of good New Yorkers. You are very hardworking and dedicated. Believe in the public safety and quality of life we ??deserve in the city. I do not see you as part of a constituency, I see you as brothers and sisters. Therefore, since I am the mayor, we can say that we have the first Albanian mayor ", said Adams.

Gjergj Kastrioti-Skënderbeu is the third street in the Bronx neighborhood that honors well-known Albanian figures, after Mother Teresa and Fan Noli.
