Supreme Court Overturns Asset Seizure Order Against Former Deputy Prime Minister Arben Ahmetaj

Albania’s Supreme Court has overturned a one-year-old decision that had imposed a preventive seizure on assets belonging to former Deputy Prime Minister Arben Ahmetaj, according to local media reports.

The ruling was announced during the day by Judge Gent Shala.

The Supreme Court ordered the annulment of the decision dated June 14, 2025, issued by the Special Court of Appeals, and sent the case back for retrial before a different judicial panel.

The earlier ruling, requested by the Special Prosecution against Corruption (SPAK), had placed a preventive seizure on several assets linked to Ahmetaj, including a 167-square-meter apartment registered in his name, as well as financial funds held in bank accounts and deposits in Albania.

Those assets included a reported €8,620.68 in a bank account and €115,692.84 in a separate deposit account.

The case forms part of ongoing legal proceedings involving the former senior official, who has faced scrutiny in connection with corruption-related investigations.

Authorities have not yet issued further comments following the Supreme Court’s decision.
