Tensions Escalate at Student Protest in Tirana as Demonstrators Clash With Police

Tensions escalated during a student protest in the Albanian capital on Tuesday, as demonstrators blocked major roads and marched toward the Ministry of Education.

The protest, which began at 2 p.m. local time, drew a large number of students along Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard before demonstrators headed toward the ministry building.

The situation grew increasingly tense after a group of students set fire to cardboard and other objects in the middle of the road near the ministry. Protesters also continued throwing eggs, tomatoes and firecrackers toward the building.

The march was accompanied by loud chants against the government, while police increased security measures and reinforced cordons around the ministry.

Clashes between protesters and police continued at the intersection of Durrës Street and Mine Peza Street. During the confrontations, one protester was taken into police custody and was seen with apparent blood on his face.

The protest has caused significant traffic disruptions across parts of the capital, with tensions remaining high as demonstrations continue.
