Union of Greek Municipalities Seek Release of Fredi Beleri
Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE) demands the immediate release of the newly elected mayor of the Municipality of Himara, Fredi Beleri.
According to foreign media, the Governing Board of KEDE with its resolution expresses its support for the mayor, who has been in custody since May 13, and calls on the Albanian government to proceed with his immediate release.
It emphasizes that the detention of Fredi Beleri, even after he was declared the winner in the local elections, is a flagrant violation of the basic rules of human rights and the rule of law.
The Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Hieronymos met today with Petros Beleri, the son of the elected mayor of Himara, Dionysios Fredi Beleri.
His Highness was informed by Petros Beleris about his father's state of health and wished him a speedy recovery. He also noted that because the issue is extremely delicate and concerns the rights of ethnic minorities in Albania, he will communicate competently with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Archbishop of Tirana and All Albania Anastas Janullatos.
