US Ambassador Supports DP’s Territorial Reform Request

Democratic Party (DP) of Albania focused on consultations on Territorial Reform, which is one of the priorities of the DP in this new political season and after these discussions, the US Ambassador Yuri Kim has underlined Friday that there’s work to be done regarding the reform in question and corruption.

In her statement, the diplomat highlighted it is great that the DP has returned to Parliament and that there are actions to be taken to make sure there are better elections next time.

“There are also actions that need to be taken to ensure that we have better choices next time. To address all deficiencies identified in the ODIHR report. There is also work to be done in terms of territorial reform and corruption.

And all this requires to have a strong and united DP and move forward, but it cannot be done forward if one foot is left in the past.

And so as always we expect to move forward with Albania, with the people, with the DP, towards the future. Let's move forward”, proclaimed the Ambassador earlier today.

Previously, the Democratic Party (DP) Vice Chairman Enkelejd Alibeaj said that the Territorial Reform should be redone and that the Democrats are ready to sit down for talks, although he claimed that the reform approved by the Socialist Party (SP), and without the votes of the Democrats, has failed.

Democrat MP gave several reasons why, according to him, this reform has failed, which are related to the return of municipalities to constituencies in favor of the SP, to jobs for socialist militants, and to institutions of abusive tenders.

"Municipalities have been transformed into employment deposits. The local government turned into electoral wards. The current municipalities have no service to the citizens,” stated Alibeaj.

In Albania, with the territorial reform of 2014, 61 municipalities were created. Prime Minister Rama a few weeks ago said that he is of the idea that this number of municipalities be reduced even more. Albeaj thinks differently. The senior DP official is of the opinion for more municipalities than they are, in order for the government to come as close as possible to the people.
