Women’s Role in Albanian Society Discussed
The activity "The role of women in the contemporary Albanian society: Challenges and perspectives", organized by the Embassy of Greece in Tirana and the Greek Language Department of the University of Tirana, took place at the Plaza Hotel. The welcoming speech on behalf of Ambassador Konstantina Kamitsi was delivered by the Counselor of the Embassy, Athanasios Astrakas. The conference was conceived in three panels, with the participation of the Minister of Agriculture Anila Denaj, President of Women's Economic Chamber Antonela Hako, Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages of Tirana University, Esmeralda Kromidha, publisher Irena Toci, entrepreneurs, journalists, career women, etc.
In the first panel on the topic "Women in Politics: Politics, Science and Beyond", the speakers talked about their personal experiences in the sectors where they developed their professional activity, such as the banking sector, political fields, private enterprises, etc. They pointed out the difficulties and prejudices that women encounter in every field, but despite them, they have managed to be successful in every enterprise, thanks to their very good organizational skills, teamwork management, tolerance, but also solidarity between them.
In the works of the second panel with the theme "Striking a balance: Family and Career", the speakers pointed out the challenges that women face in achieving the balance of mother - wife in career, facing the difficulties of organizing time, supporting the partner, advancement in knowledge in the professional field, etc., which they manage quite well.
Also, the need for women's contribution to the political, public, and educational sectors was emphasized, not so much as a numerical majority, but as part of the quality. The role of professional women in education is sublime because, despite the difficulties, they make a valuable contribution to making a better society.
In the third panel, "Gender Equality: Challenges and Perspectives", problems of gender (in)equality were discussed, such as excessively long hours for women compared to men, unequal wages and working conditions, concerns about discrimination against women in Albanian patriarchal families, the double discrimination of women from marginalized groups, etc. At the same time, the stress was put on the need to educate society on the principles of human rights, to empower not only women but also any other social group that suffers discrimination.
