Two Dead as Light Plane Crashed in Country NSW

Two people, believed to be an adult and a child, have died in a plane crash in a rural part of northern NSW, police have confirmed.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the crash close to the Nymboida National Park at Lilydale, 45km west of Grafton, around 9am on Tuesday.

The crash is believed to have brought down powerlines near the scene of the accident by a campsite on Winegrove Road on the banks of the Clarence River.

Wreckage at the scene shows the burnt out frame of the aircraft which appears to have plunged into the ground nosefirst before being engulfed in flames.

The dead man was said to be in his 30s and the child was aged under 10. They were on a flight from the Gold Coast at the time of the crash, said police.

First responders from NSW Police, Fire and Rescue, Ambulance and SES raced to the crash site at Winegrove Road, Lilydale, but were unable to save the pair on board.

A Westpac Air Rescue helicopter arrived at the scene around 9.47am before immediately returning to Lismore.

'A recreational aircraft clipped a power line and as a consequence of that, it has crashed on the banks of the Clarence River,' said a police spokesman.

'Unfortunately, the plane caught fire after the impact and the two occupants on the craft passed away.'

NSW Police added: 'Police will be working with aviation authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.'

The tragedy caused the power to be cut to many nearby homes and businesses, the Daily Mail reported.
