108 Years Since Ismail Qemali Declared Albania Independent

Today marks the 28th of November, a special day for all Albanians, also known as "Flag Day".

Albania celebrates 108 years since the declaration of Independence, on November 28, 1912.

On this day, Ismail Qemali raised the red and black flag in Vlora, declaring the country independent.

Also on November 28, 1443, Albania’s national hero Gjergj Kastriot Skënderbeu liberated Kruja from the Ottoman occupation and raised the national flag over its fortress.

This day marks the two most important historical events in the country, and is celebrated by all Albanians everywhere in the world.

The raising of the flag in Vlora by the great Ismail Qemali, is also considered as the second November.

What makes this celebration different this year is the fact that the country celebrates amid Covid-19 pandemic. This certainly leaves Albanians without the enthusiasm to raise red and black flags in the squares and to cheer in the name of the country's Independence, as has happened every year.

Authorities have even urged citizens to stay indoors today, avoiding crowds, infections and fines.
