14 Police Officers Arrested in First Months of 2023
In the first two months of this year, the Police Surveillanve Agency has arrested 14 police officers. Referring to the report, one of them was caught red-handed and the other 13 by court decision, as the investigations against them for various criminal offenses, such as corruption and abuse of office, had started months ago.
Of the 13 officers arrested by court decision, 9 of them were placed under the security measure of prison arrest and 4 others were placed under house arrest. While 6 police officers have been suspended from duty.
During the month of January and February, the Police Surveillance Agency referred 29 police officers to the prosecutor's office to be investigated in the relevant prosecutor's offices throughout the country. Complaints about them were mainly made by citizens.
The Special Prosecutor's Office has also launched investigations into the Economic Crimes Sector in the Tirana Police, as they have strong suspicions that some officers are involved in corrupt schemes.
The investigations involving several employees as well as leaders of the sector come after the arrest of the officer Arta Nazifi, whom the court left under house arrest on the charge of having received 5 thousand euros from two sisters who had an aesthetic clinic, against whom an investigation had been launched from the police structures. The money was given in order to close the case, as well as to return the seized products.
Meanwhile, in a meeting held on Friday, the General Director of the State Police, Muhamet Rrumbullaku, decided to suspend until the entry into force of the new structure of the State Police, all local leaders of Economic and Financial Crime, in all country circles. This is due to the lack of efficiency of these structures and the failure to meet expectations, in the fight against fiscal evasion, illegalities in the economic field, or the fight against corruption.
