Albania Among Countries That Consumed Less Alcohol During Quarantine

According to a survey published in the Daily Mail, Greece and Albania recorded the largest decrease in alcohol consumption. Britain is the only European country where its citizens consumed more alcohol during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The study focused on alcohol consumption in 21 countries on the Old Continent during the blockade and restrictive measures imposed by governments to stop the spread of the virus.

The UK was the only place where people started drinking more as soon as they were isolated. At the same time, the Irish and Germans continued to consume the same amount of alcohol as before the pandemic.

The expert survey was conducted on a sample of 32 thousand citizens from 21 European countries. Participants were asked to answer for the amount of alcohol, such as wine, beer and other alcoholic beverages consumed in April 2020.

Researchers have failed to provide a clear explanation for the increase in alcohol consumption in the UK during the pandemic.

However, they pointed out that the British are generally known for consuming large amounts of alcohol. After all, before the pandemic, the British consumed more alcohol than other Europeans.

The scientists gave each country a score ranging from minus one to plus one, based on the average in terms of alcohol consumption. According to the survey, in Britain, the average alcohol consumption during the pandemic was 0.1 while for the rest of Europe, the average was minus 0.14.

Greeks, as well as Albanians consumed less alcohol than the rest of Europe. Specifically, Albanians consumed on average less alcohol with a score of -0.37, Greeks scored minus 0.2 and Finns minus 0.19.

The study also concluded that the affordable price of alcohol is not considered an important factor because higher-income adults consumed less alcohol than those who did not.

The European study on Covid-19 Alcohol and Disease was conducted by scientists at the University of Technology in Dresden, Germany.
