Albania Has Highest Food Prices in Region

Food prices in Albania are as much as 81% of the European Union average, according to tables published by Eurostat. 

Compared to other countries in the region, Albania has the highest food prices. The second most expensive after Albania is Serbia, with 77.1% of the EU average, Montenegro (76.6%), Bosnia (74.5%).  The cheapest foods are in Republic of North Macedonia, with 60% of the European average. 

For bread and cereals, Albania ranks third most expensive (69.7% of the European average), after Montenegro (73%) and Serbia (70%). Again, bread is cheaper in North Macedonia, (56.7% of the European average). 

In terms of meat, Albania is still the most expensive in the region, with 72% of the European average. The cheapest meat is in Montenegro and North Macedonia (61.8%). 

Although a coastal country, fish in Albania is more expensive than in all other countries in the region, with 82.5% of the EU average. In North Macedonia, it costs as much as 61.7% of EU average. 

Our country also holds the record for milk, cheese and eggs, which are almost as high as the European Union average (97.9%). Dairy products are much more expensive than in Serbia (86.7%), Montenegro (83.3), Bosnia (80.4), North Macedonia (70.3). 

In addition to having expensive food prices, Albanians also have the lowest incomes in the region, which makes them have the highest share of food expenditures, with 44% of the total, from 12% which is the EU average and about 30% for other countries in the region. 

In Europe, the most expensive food is Switzerland, with 166% of the European average. Even for bread, Switzerland is still the most expensive (154%). Especially meat costs a lot in Switzerland, with 234%. 

Switzerland is followed by Norway, Iceland, Denmark, Luxembourg, Austria, Finland and France, regarding high food prices.
