Berisha's, Alibeaj's Representatives to Resume Talks for Joint Local Polls Candidate

MP and chairman of the National Council of the Democratic Party (DP), Edi Paloka and MP Gazment Bardhi, the two representatives of Berisha and Alibeaj, gathered this Tuesday in meeting to discuss the possibility of getting together in the upcoming 2023 the local elections.

At the end of today's discussion, Edi Paloka said: "It has not failed, it is the common will to come up with a candidate".

"We are continuing the discussions", MP Gazment Bardhi said briefly to the journalists.

However, the meeting between them lasted about 1 hour and a half. Gazmend Bardhi was the first to leave the meeting, followed shortly by Edi Paloka.

On Monday, Chairman of the DP, Sali Berisha, gathered the political leaders of the districts in the blue headquarters to discuss the political action of the opposition and also the start of the primaries process.

In parallel to Berisha's meeting, in the Parliament of Albania, Enkelejd Alibeaj called his parliamentary group's MPs. In the meeting with closed doors, Gazment Bardhi explained to his colleagues the communication with Edi Paloka, where unlike the optimism among the MPs of Berisha, he expressed skepticism.

"A few days ago I agreed to be the person who will contact Mr. Paloka, who was mandated by the other group of PD colleagues. I want to clarify that I have been in communication with Mr. Paloka, but we have not met because he was abroad. We agreed to meet on Tuesday. Unfortunately, in parallel with this anticipated meeting with Mr. Paloka from the media I am aware of a meeting that will take place in PD for the start of the primaries process. This makes us face a fait accompli. But I will stand by the will of the majority to the end to carry out any discussion in order to come out with a common candidate in the local elections", said Bardhi.

Faced with being placed in fait accompli positions, MPs Agron Gjekmarkaj and Flutura Açka asked their colleagues in Alibeaj's group to start work on holding meetings and identifying potential candidates to come up with specific names if the negotiations fail.

Such a scenario would lead the Democratic Party and the opposition in a situation similar to the one of March 6, when they had 2 candidates each and were defeated in 5 of the 6 municipalities where they contested.
